Herb of the nasturtium. The preparations of nasturtium herb are generally only used as combination preparations for internal use (e.g. in combination with extracts of horseradish root).

Commission E: Since at the time of processing no mono-preparation, but only combination preparations were in circulation, the Commission E has only drawn up a positive substance characteristic: on the basis of the pharmacological properties, a positive contribution to the efficacy in combinations with other drugs for the supportive treatment of infections of the draining urinary tract can be assumed qualitatively, as well as in catarrh of the respiratory tract and externally in light muscle pain.

The efficacy determining ingredient is glucotropaeolin (about 0.1%), a glucosinolate (mustard oil glycoside) from which benzyl isothiacyanate (benzyl isothiocyanate) is produced by hydrolytic cleavage. Furthermore, the herb contains up to 320mg/100g vitamin C and carotenoids in the flowers.

Antimicrobial (bacteriostatic, virostatic, antimycotic), hyperemic.

Indications according to the guidelines of Commission E: Infections of the urinary tract and in catarrhal processes of the airways.

3x15mg benzyl legume oil administered in gastric juice-resistant soft tissue capsules. The duration of the therapy should be limited to 4 weeks.

Most internal applications contain the genuine glucosinolates, which are hydrolytically cleaved in the intestine, the mustard oil is only released there (analogous to the horseradish preparations, see below Armorciae rusticanae radix).
