Bark from the trunk and branches of the snowball tree, mainly root bark in the trade. Grey-brown on the outside, reddish-brown, bitter-tasting bark on the inside.

Herbal medicine: Used as an astringent, tonic and sedative, against vomiting during pregnancy, climacteric complaints. Also used as a diuretic, as well as for cramps and asthma, also for uterine cramps after pregnancy and for threatened miscarriage. Also used in TCM and homeopathy.

Iridoid glycosides of the Valeriana type, flavonoids, aesculetin, salicylic acid, tannins, isochlorogenic acid, ursolic acid, coumarins, biflavones and phenolic acids.
