Diosgenin is a steroidal sapogenin which is found in Disococera species (see below yam root, see Rhizoma Dioscoreae villosae - here up to 10%) and also in the seeds of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum), in the rootstock(Asparagi rhizoma) of vegetable asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) and the white onion (Allium cepa). Structurally, this is the aglycone of dioscin.

Diosgenin is a steroidal sapogenin which is mainly used in the industrial production of steroid compounds (oral contraceptives, sex hormones).
