Transmembranous glycoproteins from the group of cadherins. In the skin, mainly desmoglein 1 and desmoglein 3 are expressed in intercellular compounds and act as adhesion molecules in desmosomes. In adults desmoglein 1 is expressed in all skin layers, desmoglein 3 mainly in the stratum basale and stratum granulosum.
