Glutamate dehydrogenase

Glutamate dehydrogenase is an enzyme that catalyses the oxidative deamination of glutamate with the help of NAD or NADP to α ketoglutarate. It has a high organ specificity and thus indicates liver cell necrosis. The enzyme is exclusively localized in mitochondria.

Standard value: The reference range is < 4.8 U/l for women and < 6.4 U/l for men.

Pathologically elevated: hepatic carcinoma and metastases, occlusive secterus, acute toxic liver damage, hypoxic hepatopathy, hepatic congestion, primary cirrhosis, intra- and extrahepatic cholestasis, acute, chronically aggressive and persistent viral hepatitis, acute alcoholic hepatitis
