Curcuma longa grows as a perennial and herbaceous plant, which reaches growth heights of up to 1 m. It forms strongly branched rhizomes, yellow to orange in colour, at the end of which tubers develop. The plant has leaves with stems that are between 20 and 45 cm long. The flowering time of Curcuma longa is in August. The flowers are white with downy hairy sepals and three light yellow petals. Curcuma longa is the parent plant of Curcumae longae rhizoma.

Curcuma is responsible for the yellow colour of the curry spice.
