Berberidis fructus

Extract from the berries of Berberis vulgaris, the barberry fruit or sour thorn berries.

Empirical medicine: lung, liver and spleen disorders.

Food: Compote, jam or marmalade, dried with muesli

Fruit acids, pectin, gum, sugar, vitamin C, carotene, lutein. Unripe fruits contain the alkaloid berberin, they are poisonous. Ripe fruits on the other hand do not contain the alkaloid berberin.

The medicinal uses of Berberidis fructus have not been sufficiently proven. Folk medicine uses the extracts for liver diseases. They are also found in soft drinks.
