Colorless, violet fluorescent substance obtained industrially from coal tar. The naturally occurring anthracene derivatives are characteristic drug ingredients. These include anthrones, anthranols and anthraquinones, which are mostly present as glycosides (linked to a sugar in an acetal-like manner).
