Score for calculating the risk of apoplexy in atrial fibrillation (VHF):

• Chronic heart failure or left ventricular dysfunction: 1 point
• Hypertension: 1 point
• Age ≥ 75 years: 2 points
• Diabetes mellitus: 1 point
• Apoplexy / TIA / Thromboembolism: 2 points
• Pre-existing vascular disease: 1 point
• Age 65 - 74 years: 1 point
• Sex category (female sex): 1 point

With a value of 0 points, the risk of apoplexy is low and anticoagulation is not necessary. At ≥ 2 points, oral anticoagulation should be performed in any case. A decision must be made in each individual case (Baenkler 2010)
