Tilesius, wilhelm gottlieb

(¤ 17.7.1769,  17.5.1857) Born on 17.7.1769 in Mühlhausen (Thuringia) as son of the merchant Adolph Gottfried. Tilesius received his school education from his parents at home. Later he went to the local grammar school, which still bears his name today. His cousin on his mother's side was Carl Gustav Carus, 20 years younger. In 1790 he began studying medicine (and natural sciences in Leipzig), which he completed in 1795. This was followed by a 5-year training in pathology. 1797 Doctorate as Magister atrium et Doctor Philosophiae. In the following years he was intensively occupied with the pictorial representation of skin diseases and their systematics. His depiction of the so-called porcupine man is generally known. Despite numerous publications he never held a higher academic position.
