Ricord, philippe

(¤ 1800, † 1889) French surgeon and syphilodologist. Born in Baltimore to French parents, he received his medical training at the Sarbonne in Paris. As a surgeon at the Hôpital du Midi, he was mainly concerned with venereal diseases. He described the 3 phases of syphilis. Through numerous experiments, Ricord was able to clearly prove the difference between syphilis and gonorrhoea and thus "finally bring the half century long dispute to a decision". He stated for all times: "Gonorrhea never produces chancre and syphilis". Ricord was appointed personal physician to Prince Napoleon and was consulted. Surgeon to Emperor Napoleon III. After Hunter, Ricord was one of the greatest authorities in the field of venereal diseases.
