Aqueous solution of dissolved iodine and potassium iodide described in DAB 7 (potassium iodide and iodine in the ratio 2:1), which is used as a disinfectant and as an indicator for starch and dextrins. The Lugol solution is classified according to the French standard. Lugol 's solution is named after the French dermatologist J.G. Lugol who used the formulation for the first time in case of skin tuberculosis. Iodine is poorly soluble in water. The solubility is improved by potassium iodide (under formation of so-called polyiodides).
