Annular hypertrichosis characterized by longer and thicker hair around a congenital localized alopecia on the capillitium. The hair crown sign is considered a possible leading symptom for ectopic nerve tissue, which has been relocated peripherally as a result of dysraphism (disturbance of the neural tube closure). Depending on whether only parts of the meninges or additionally parts of brain tissue prolapse, this finding is called meningocele or meningoencephalocele.
