Hair shaft anomalies (overview) L67.-

Congenital or acquired, endogenously or exogenously induced, growth disorders of the hair shaft.

Depending on the fragility of the hair shaft can be classified as follows:

• Hair shaft abnormalities with increased hair fragility:
  • Monilethrix (see below Monilethrix syndrome)
  • Pseudomonilethrix
  • Trichorrhexis nodosa
  • Pili torti
  • Bamboo hair (Trichorrhexis invaginata).
  • Trichoptilosis
• Hair shaft abnormalities without hair fragility:
  • Pili anulati
  • Pili pseudoanulati (variant of normal hair)
  • Woolly hair nevus ( curly hair nevus)
  • Acquired progressive hair curvature
  • Pili canaliculi (syndrome of unmanageable hair)
  • Pili multigemini (growth of several hair shafts from the same dermal papilla and through the same hair canal; norm variant)
  • Pili bifurcati (Pili multi-bifurcati) - see also tufted hairs
  • Pseudofolliculitis barbae
  • Rolling hairs
• Other hair shaft abnormalities:
  • Air bubble hair (air pockets due to too hot blow drying)
  • Trichonodosis (hair knots).
