Fibroblast growth factor 23

The "fibroblast growth factor 23" (FGF23) is a protein of the FGF family, which is responsible for the phosphate metabolism. Its synthesis takes place in bone tissue.

FGF23 has an inhibitory effect on calcitriol synthesis and renal phosphate absorption. This is achieved by inhibition of 1-alpha-hydroxylase and stimulation of 24-hydroxylase. The rareFGF23-producing tumors(phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor) are associated with tumor-associated phosphaturia and consecutive osteomalacia.
