Structure: Membrane protein (40 kDa)

Note: CD 178 (also Fas ligand) belongs to the tumor necrosis factors. The binding of CD 178 to its receptor CD 95 (Fas or FasR) induces apoptosis. This mechanism plays a pathogenetic role in toxic epidermolysis, e.g. in Stevens-Johnson syndrome (see special comments on Fas ligand).

The soluble FAS ligand is also found in elevated concentrations in the serum of patients with severe drug reactions (see below Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
