Sodium carrageenan (inci)

"Sodium" refers to the element sodium, "carrageenan" to extracts from the Carrageenanum, the Irish moss, a dried thallus of various species of red algae.

The mixture of substances is used in cosmetic formulations. It acts as an antistatic agent (reduces electrostatic charges (e.g. of the hair), binder (ensures the cohesion of products containing powder), emulsion stabilizer (supports the emulsion formation and improves the product stability), film former (forms a film on skin, hair or nails) and as viscosity regulator (increases or decreases the viscosity (toughness) of cosmetic products).
