Quaternium (see also Polyquaternium), also called quats, denotes complex quaternary ammonium compounds. Quaternary ammonium compounds have quaternary nitrogen atoms, i.e. all four hydrogen atoms of the ammonium ion (nitrogen atom) are replaced by organic residues.
