Potassium ethyl paraben (inci)

"Potassium" refers to the element potassium, "ethylparaben" to a paraben. Potassium ethylparaben is used in cosmetic formulations as a preservative (inhibits the growth of microorganisms).

The framework conditions for preservatives which may be used in cosmetics are defined in the EC Cosmetics Regulation - 1223/2009 - Annex V.

The use of parabens is still controversially discussed. From a scientific point of view parabens are safe preservatives. The available studies and reports do not provide evidence for a verifiable hormone-like effect of the approved parabens in the valid application concentrations in humans (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety - SCCS).
