Methicone is a silicone-based polymer used in cosmetic formulations. Methicone, like all silicone polymers, has a high molecular weight. Due to its size it is not able to penetrate the skin. The CIR has recommended to use Methicone up to a concentration of 15%.

Methicone acts as an antistatic agent (reduces static charges by neutralising the electrical charge on the surface, e.g. in hair). Furthermore Methicone acts as a film former, as an emollient (makes the skin supple and smoothes it) and as a skin care product.
