Lauric acid, also called lauric acid (see also there) or dodecanoic acid, is a naturally occurring, saturated carboxylic acid with the structural formula CH3(CH2)10 COOH. Lauric acid is used in cosmetic formulations. The carboxylic acid acts as emulsifier (changes the interfacial tension of liquids like water and oil so that they can be mixed together) and surfactant (washing-active substance); furthermore it has a cleansing effect on the body surface.
