Hirudo extract (inci)

Hirudo extract is an extract obtained from leeches (hirudo). The extract is used in cosmetic preparations and has a skin-caring effect. It is also used as a fragrance (reduces or inhibits the basic smell or taste of a product).

Undesirable effects: Sensitization to systemic as well as local applications of hirudin is known (Smith KJ et al. 2001). Contact allergic reactions (contact allergic eczema, type IV allergy - Zollner TM et al.1996) to native hirudin have been described in isolated cases. During therapy with medical leeches, local contact allergic or irritant reactions can also be observed; anaphylactic systemic reactions are rare.
