PIP3

PIP3 is the acronym for: phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-triphosphate. Phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-triphosphate (PIP3) is a phospholipid found in the cell membrane. Like PIP2, PIP3 is located on the cytosolic side of the cell membrane.

PIP2 plays an important role in the transmission of extracellular signals into the cell (e.g., in the signal transduction pathway of activated B cells) and regulates endocytosis.

Phosphoinositide-3-kinases (PI3K) convert PIP2 into phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-triphosphate (PIP3). The reverse reaction from PIP3 to PIP2 is catalyzed by the phosphatase PTEN (see below:PTEN gene).
