Di-2-ethylhexylphthalate

Diethylhexyl phthalate is one of the most important phthalate-based plasticizers. It is the diester of phthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate is also a diluent for epoxy resins. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate is also found in cooling lubricants and cosmetic products. Diethylhexyl phthalate was formerly used as a film former and solvent.

Larger studies have shown a correlation between atmospheric phthalate exposure and allergic asthma. Furthermore, atopic eczema can be exacerbated. Contact sensitisations are described less frequently.

When DEHP is incorporated into polymeric materials, they become more elastic and supple. Important: DEHP does not form a chemical compound. It can therefore escape again and diffuse into the food, e.g. from food packaging, or be absorbed perorally from children's toys. DEHP is prohibited in toys and childcare articles.
