Autoantibodies of the IgG and/or IgA class against structures of intercellular contacts, in particular desmosomal components in the epidermis. To date, both cadherins (calcium-dependent, transmembrane adhesion molecules) and intracellular proteins of desmosomal plaques have been identified as autoantigens. See also pemphigus.
