All autosomal genes, i.e. all genes that are not involved in sex formation, are present in duplicate copies in the genome. Many genes must also be expressed from both alleles to maintain normal cell function. For example, if one allele of a gene is lost, half the gene dosage may not be sufficient for normal cell function.
