The dried rhizomes and roots of butcher's broom contain a mixture of various steroid saponins (such as the spirostanol saponins ruscin, ruscuside, aglyka, ruscogenin) . Therapeutically they are used for the treatment of lower leg edema in chronic venous insufficiency. Ruscogenin is used as hemorrhoidal therapeutic agent.
