Ratanhia is a plant of the genus Krameria from the Krameriaceae family, native to Bolivia and Peru. The plant grows to a height of 20 to 100 cm. Ratanhia has small leaves about 1 cm long. Its flowers are reddish-purple. The root system is pronounced and strong (about 5 to 10 cm thick). The root contains tannins and is used to treat inflammation in the mouth or in dental care products.
Ratanhia is the parent plant of Ratanhiae radix, the official drug(positive monograph of Commission E), which is often used as an astringent tincture mixed with myrrh tincture.
