Shrub from the buttercup family, up to 30 cm tall with soft, 5-part leaves, white flowers, rhizome and roots contain a yellow sap. Occurrence: Forest areas in eastern Canada and the eastern states of the USA.
The root, Hydrastis rhizoma, is used phytotherapeutically. This should not be confused with Javanese turmeric.
