Rubus fruticosus, also known as blackberry or true blackberry, is a plant species from the globally distributed plant genus Rubus, which belongs to the Rosaceae (rose family).

Blackberry species are winter bare or winter green (climbing) plants that reach growth heights of between 0.5 and 3 m. Depending on the species, blackberry species have more or less spines that serve as climbing aids for the plant, and the alternately arranged leaves are divided into leaf stem and leaf blade. They flower from May to August. When ripe, the fruits are mostly blue-black in colour and are botanically speaking not berries but aggregate fruits. When chewing the berry, one bites on small stones of the fruit, in which the seeds of the blackberry can also be found. The fruit ripens in August and September, in some cases not until October.
