The name "Wegener's granulomatosis" for the necrotizing granulomatous disease of the upper respiratory tract with vasculitis of small to medium-sized vessels, first described by Friedrich Wegener in 1936, is increasingly being avoided after Friedrich Wegener's Nazi past was revealed in 2000. More recently, several professional societies, including the American College of Rheumatology, the European League Against Rheumatism, and the American Society of Nephrology, proposed the name"granulomatosis with polyangiitis" in a 2011 editorial.
