Spirochetes of the genus Leptospira, are the bacteria of this genus that have humapathological significance. All pathogenic leptospires are grouped under the name Leptospira interrogans with different subtypes (2000 serotypes, 23 serovars).
The following subtypes of Leptospira interrogans are of human medical interest:
- Leptospira icterohaemorrhagica: Severe courses of leptospirosis are usually caused by Leptospira icterohaemorrhagica and are referred to as Weil 's disease.
- Leptospira canicola (Canicola fever)
- Leptospira bataviae (field, mud and harvest fever)
