Some forms of immune mediated polyneuropathy are associated with the occurrence of specific autoantibodies in serum.
Antibody formation can be partially
directed against a glycoprotein in the cell membrane of myelin sheaths
(MAG= myelin-associated glycoprotein).
Anti-MAG-Ak seems to be
involvedin the demyelination of the affected nerve tracts, especially in monoclonal IgM gammopathies,
and can be detected in serum at a frequency of more than 50%.

The chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIPD) is
accompaniedby slowly progressive,
symmetrically emphasized pareses and in individual cases shows an Ak formation against MAG.
