Evergreen liana species from the Orchidaceae family, native to Mexico and Central America. It is the parent plant of Fructus vanillae (vanilla, vanilla fruits, vanilla beans), the fruits collected and fermented before ripening (the fruits are actually called vanilla ). Vanillin is an aldehyde that is produced during fermentation.
