He received his first dermatological training at the University Dermatology Clinic in Hamburg. With A. Marchionini, Spier moved to Munich. 1953 habilitation there on the subject of "The epicutaneous lobule sample as an aid in experimental and clinical eczema research". 1957 appointment as full professor.
