(¤ 19.9.1871, † 1906) bacteriologist. Schaudinn was born in East Prussia as the son of an estate manager. He first studied German language and literature in Berlin at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-University, later zoology. 1894 Assistant position at the Institute of Zoology. 1898 habilitation on the subject: "The importance of protozoan research for cytology". 1901-1904 Head of a malaria station in Dalmatia. Later head of the new department for protozoology at the Imperial Health Office. 1905 discovery of syphilis pirochetes together with Erich Hoffmann. Schaudinn and Hoffmann demonstrated their discovery on 17 May 1905 at a meeting of the Berlin Medical Society. Schaudinn died in 1906 from the consequences of sepsis, probably as a result of a self-experiment with amoebas.
