Habilitation in 1928. 1931 First description of the syndrome named after Melkersson and Rosenthal. Rosenthal's further scientific career failed under the National Socialist regime. In 1933, the Prussian Ministry of Culture refused to appoint him as an extraordinary professor "on racial grounds". He emigrated to Switzerland and died in Paris in 1937 as a result of a car accident.
