In protein biosynthesis (expression; production of a protein in a living organism), termination occurs through so-called stop codons (three-part base combination), which are recognized as such by the protein synthesis apparatus. If a stop codon is newly generated by a mutation in the coding region of a gene, premature termination of protein synthesis occurs. The result is a shortened, possibly functionless protein.
