Maskne

Fake word for mask-associated acne-like skin lesions on the face. The term originated during the corona pandemic. Common in patients with preexisting seborrheic skin, rosacea, acne but also new as perioral dermatitis or exacerbation of preexisting atopic dermatitis.

Occlusion effect with development of warm and humid climate, sebaceous congestion, followed by disturbance of skin protective barrier and local microbiome, possible proliferation of bacteria, e.g. Propionibacterium acnes, but also contact allergic mechanisms to the components contained in the mask, dyes and others.

Frequent changing of the mask, gentle facial cleansing, avoidance of cosmetics such as make-up under the mask, avoidance of fragrances, skin care according to skin type, drying, tannin-containing externals such as black tea compresses in between, avoidance of heat. Under the mask developed acne, rosacea or perioral dermatitis according to the clinical picture.
