Abnormal widening of the stratum granulosum of the epidermis, e.g. in lichen planus. In general, hypergranulosis is accompanied by compact orthohyperkeratosis. Exceptions are pityriasis rubra pilaris, in which the hypergranulosis is accompanied by ortho and parakeratosis, and flat warts, in which the hypergranulosis is overlaid by basket-weave-like orthokeratosis.
