Chronic stage of inflammation with predominant proliferation of connective tissue cells, histiocytes and capillaries. According to the predominant functions of the granulation tissue, a distinction must be made:
- Resorption tissue (e.g. in the resorption of necroses, thrombi, etc.).
- Replacement tissue (e.g. for skin and mucous membrane defects).
- Demarcation tissue (e.g. in the demarcation of an abscess).
A scar (defect healing) always occurs as a result of granulation tissue.
