(¤ 1904, † 1982) Wolfgang Gerler was born on 1.12.1904 in Kiel. He spent his youth in Chemnitz. There in 1924 Abitur. First he studied philosophy and musicology in Freiburg. In 1929 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the early piano works of Robert Schumann. 1929 Medical studies in Berlin. Doctorate in 1932. 1937 specialist dermatological training with Walter Frieboes in Berlin. Continued specialist training with Heinrich Gottron/Breslau. Later scientific assistant to Gottron. 1945 Flight from Breslau. Takeover of a specialist practice in Jena. Further scientific work with Josef Hämel/Jena. 1947 Habilitation on "experimental studies on the sulphonamide content in body fluids during gonorrhoea treatment". 1947 senior physician with Heinrich Löhe/Charité. 1947 change to Karl Linser at the University Dermatology Clinic Leipzig. There he was appointed senior physician and deputy clinic director. 1950 Appointment as professor. 1951 Director of the Dermatological Clinic and Prorector for Young Researchers. In Leipzig, Wolfgang Höfs, Heinz Gartmann and Albert Schimpf habilitated under Gertler. 1962, in succession to Karl Linser, appointment to the chair of dermatology at the Charité.

Scientific fields of activity: skin tuberculosis, psoriasis, occupational skin diseases, malignant melanoma. His standard work "Systematic Dermatology" from 1976 is of great importance. His habilitation candidates in Berlin were: Rolf Stäps, Niels Sönnichsen, Klaus Harnack.
