Evidence (from the Latin exvidere - the outward appearance) literally means "that which is unquestionable by appearance, that which is recognizable by direct observation or insight". Evident is a state of affairs that is immediately obvious without any particular methodical appropriation. The term evidence cannot be misinterpreted with the English "evidence", since "evidence" has a completely opposite meaning in English. Evidence can be translated as "based on evidence". The term "evidence-based, or evidence-based medicine", which is commonly used in colloquial medicine, is thus a gross misinterpretation of the original meaning of the word.
