Dermatohistopathological reaction pattern of the epidermis characterized by hyperkeratosis with orthokeratosis, hypergranulosis and cytolysis in the upper layers of the stratum spinosum and stratum granulosum. The basal epithelial cells show a granular eosinophilic degeneration with bright cytoplasm and clumped keratohyalin granules. Electron microscopy reveals suprabasal keratinocytes with irregularly aggregated intermediate keratin filaments.
