Ectoin is a low-molecular cyclic amino acid derivative, which is used in various applications. Microorganisms natively occurs. It was first detected in the purple bacterium Halorhodospira halochloris (formerly Ectothiorhodospira halochloris = name). Ectoin reduces e.g. denaturation processes. Halophilic microorganisms use these properties of ectoin to protect their cytoplasmic biomolecules against heat, freezing, dryness and osmotic stress.
