Connective tissue part of the skin that connects the epidermis and the subcutis. In addition to elastic fibres, there are mainly collagen fibres. The epidermal skin appendages (hair, sweat and sebaceous glands) are located in the dermis. The following parts are distinguished:

  • Stratum papillare: Loose connective tissue lying between the epidermal rete ridges.
  • Stratum reticulare: Deeper dermis layer that includes abundant type I collagenous fibers. These lie in an angular arrangement and allow the skin to stretch. The abundant collagenous fibres lead to resetting.
