CD121a (the acronym CD stands for "Cluster of Differentiation" and refers to groups of cellular surface features that have been classified according to biochemical or functional criteria. The CD classification enables comprehensible transparency in immunohistological and immunological diagnostics.

General informationThis section has been translated automatically.

CD121a designates the 80 kD, type1 interleukin-1 receptor (see below Interleukin-1) (or in short: IL1R1). This is a transmembrane glycoprotein (receptor protein) that is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily.

CD121a is encoded by a gene located on chromosomal segment 2q12.

Interleukin-1 receptor type 1 can be activated by interleukin-1alpha and interleukin-1beta (see interleukin-1 below). It is expressed on:

  • T cells
  • dendritic cells
  • fibroblasts
  • vascular endothelia
  • epithelial and neurogenic cells

and influences apoptosis and the MAP kinase signaling pathway. Interleukin-1 receptor type 1 (IL1R1) activities are regulated by its antagonist, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL1Ra). This anatgonist can be produced recombinantly and used therapeutically(Anakinra).
