(¤ 1857,  1941) John Templeton Bowen was born in Boston on 8 July 1857, attended Latin school there and studied medicine at Havard University from 1879. In 1884 he began his first dermatological training in Berlin, Munich and Vienna. Since 1889 assistant in the dermatological outpatient department of the Massachusetts General Hospital under James Clarke White. Habilitation in 1896. After White retired, he became his successor. In 1902 the American Dermatological Association elected him president. In 1907 he was appointed professor. Bowen was primarily involved in dermatohistological research. When White and Darier described the clinical picture known as M. Darier or Dyskeratosis follicularis in 1889, Bowen provided the histopathological part of the histopathology. Bowen was the first to recognize the epithelial nature of "dyskeratotic cells" ( dyskeratosis). 1912 First description of the disease named after Bowen as "precancerous dermatoses". He referred to the histological similarities with Paget's disease, radiodermatitis and actinic keratoses. After his retirement in 1912 he worked in the practice and in an advisory capacity until 1927.
