Bommer studied medicine at the universities of Gießen, Heidelberg and Frankfurt/Main from 1911. 1921 assistant at Samariterhaus/ Heidelberg; 1922 to 1924 assistant doctor at the University Dermatology Clinic in Heidelberg. In 1925 he moved to the Dermatology Clinic at the University of Gießen, which was under the direction of Albert Jesionek. In 1928 he was awarded his habilitation. 1931 he became a research assistant at the Dermatology Clinic of the Charité in Berlin. 1935 senior physician and 1938 associate professor of dermatology. 1939 Appointment as consultant nutritionist at the university clinics. From 1940 he was head of the University Dermatology Clinic. In 1950 he became full professor of dermatology at the University of Greifswald and remained in this position until 1962. From 1953 to 1956 he was Dean of the Medical Faculty.
