Shale oils are natural products, whose basic substance is a sulphur-rich oil shale, in which decomposition products of numerous marine organisms and microorganisms are enclosed. Shale oil is obtained from the oil shale rock by heating under the exclusion of air. Subsequent distillation at low and high temperatures produces fractions which, after sulphonation with concentrated sulphuric acid and final neutralisation (this achieves the ambiphilic character of the fractions), are used for the production of exteriors. In contrast to tar products, bituminosulfonates are largely free of carcinogens. Bituminosulfonates are soluble in water, fat, glycerine, partly in ethanol and ether.
